Container Door J Seals

Introduction

ISO shipping containers have three sided container door J seals on the left hand door and a four sided seal on the right hand door. The right hand door has an overlap plate fitted to prevent the doors from being closed in the wrong order. The right hand door may also have a lockbox fitted for greater security.

“J seals” or “J type seals” (so called because they are J shaped in cross section) or “door gaskets” as they are also commonly known are the standard on dry goods containers regardless of their sizes. They are made from black EPDM rubber. They also function well in extreme temperatures while offering excellent resistance to weathering and UV light.

J Seal Supply Options

At Bloxwich we have three options for the supply of container door j seals:

1) Extruded Lengths

2.5m and 5m lengths of extruded container door J seal are always in stock. Commonly customers use these to repair existing container door seals. These can also be used to make up your own sizes of seal sets for custom cargo containers etc. This is also the cheapest option for J seal.

2) Standard 8’6” & 9’6” Container Seal Sets

The BCP19200-004 and BCP19200-011 seal sets that we stock and sell all the time are made by CIMC. They are ideal for seal set replacement and new build 8’6(2591mm) and 9’6” (2896mm) freight containers. These are made in huge numbers hence the great prices that we sell them at but are only available in two sizes.

3) Custom Seal Set Sizes

We can also make up custom door seal sets to your exact sizes. Simply email sales@bloxwichgroup.com with the door overall width(s) and height(s) and quantities to get a quote.

We then extrude, cut/mitre and thermally bond the corners (making them as a strong as the rest of the seal). It’s a labour intensive process hence their higher prices but you can get any size of seal. However a minimum order quantity of 40m of extrusion is required. Generally speaking the more you buy the better the prices are. Lead times start at 7 days and increase with quantity (up to 35 days MAX).

Accessories

Bloxwich also manufacture the door seal retaining strips and supply the pop rivets to fit them. Both are 304SS and are required to fit container door J seals to containers. If carrying out repairs, it may be possible to reuse the existing door seal retaining strips (and the holes in the doors).

We can also make any heights in-between and doors narrower than the 1143mm wide standard ones too.

Q) How do I join this seal? A) A “cyanoacrylate” adhesive e.g. PERMABOND® 105 (or similar glue for EPDM rubber) is required to glue the mitred corners or straights if replacing a section of seal (further details can be supplied if required).
