Container Door Seals – Other Types
Posted on Jul 08, 2025
We are often asked, do you supply any other types of container door seal? The answer is yes and here are the details:
Compression Type Container Door Seals
More commonly found on offshore containers and storage containers these seals are cut to width from self-adhesive (one side) closed cell EPDM/CR sponge sheets. They are available in several thickness options and are joined to form 10m rolls.
Compression type door seals are easily fitted. However, they do require a slightly different design for the doors to compress the sponge and create the seal. As a result, seals are required on all four sides of both doors (on both doors verticals and horizontally on the header and footer rails). Approximately 6mm of compression all round is required. Lastly, these seals are easily repaired or re-adhered but they do reduce the door aperture height by apx 80-100mm.
Edge Type Seal
Bloxwich now offer “bubble” or “car door” or “edge” type seal for use on various doors, panels and enclosures etc.
They have a PVC/EPDM sponge and steel carrier (the bit that grips the seal in place). They are fitted onto flat bar, RSA or plate edges of doors or frames to form a seal against by compressing the bubble slightly.
Fitting edge seal is very easy. Press or use a rubber mallet the push the seal onto the required edges and cut to length with snips etc. The ends are generally at the lowest point. Hence (if required) a Ø9mm sponge cord can be inserted and glued to maintain the seal at the join. This also reduces the possibility of the ends coming loose in use.
“C” Type Container Door Seal
So called because they are C shaped in cross section. “C” type container door seals are another type of ISO container door seal that can be fitted to the lowers of some seal sets (“JC” type) or to the entire seal. However we don’t stock them as they are far less popular.
As their dimensions are similar to “J” seals it’s possible to cut the back of the “J” off to turn them into a “C” seal for repairs.
Fitting of C and J seals requires the same seal retaining strips and rivets. They are difficult to fit but do maximise the door aperture which is vital on ISO shipping containers.
Stocks
Compression seals in several different thicknesses and widths and are supplied in 10m rolls from stock (samples available on request) and other thicknesses and widths are easily created.
Edge seal is supplied in 50m rolls (samples available on request).
Bloxwich do not stock “C” seals. Instead we do stock “J” seal in 2.5m & 5m lengths and 8’6” & 9’6” container seal sets. However these would require the above modification. Custom seal sets are also available (minimum order quantity of 40m of extrusion is required) and would also require modification.
